PBS
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a national program that addresses the behavioral and discipline systems needed for successful learning. There are more than 400 Colorado schools using the PBS system. Parents are encouraged to use the program in their home. The students are recognized by teachers, bus drivers and parents as part of the Positive Behavior Support initiative. With PBS, teachers have more time to go over lessons with students and administrators spend less time dealing with behavioral issues.
“PBS increases a student’s sense of belonging to the school community. By recognizing and encouraging appropriate behavior, academic engagement and learning increase,” said APS Superintendent John L. Barry. In comparing discipline data from 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 in PBS sites reported:
- 3% decrease in Office Discipline Referrals
- 1% decrease in in-school suspensions
- 10% decrease in out-of-school suspensions
- 33% decrease in expulsions
